GTA Ontario new guy
Hello my name is George I am a metal enthusiast who is looking to improve my skill set and knowledge. I am a chrome plater with a background in the jewelry arts. I see most of you are auto folks. I am more of a nerd as I am building an all aluminum War-Machine frome the Ironman franchise. I look forward to reading and picking your brains on techniques and hopefully I can contribute in return. Thanks for reading...George

Welcome George,
And since you are a chrome plater, I have a question about nickel plating that goes under the chrome. With a Ni chloride + Ni sulfate + Boric acid bath, what can a DIY plater use as a brightener? I've heard that saccharine will work, and possibly maple syrup. Commercial users buy brightener from suppliers ready to mix in, and the ingredients are proprietary, sold in 5 gal buckets. Since my tank is 2 gallons, I need about a table spoon or so. Thus my question about saccharine. Also, have they come up with a trivalent chrome that is the equal in appearance and mechanical properties to hexavalent? This is a little outside the scope of metal shaping, but when trying to restore dented motorcycle tanks and other small parts, it becomes an issue to consider. You will like this site, the ability pool is vast and deep. CZ |

Hi George welcome to the forum

Welcome to the Forum George. New members here have a tendency to spend a lot of time reading. There is a wealth of information and knowledge that is willingly shared. You'll see some world class metal work and some entry level attempts who ask questions and "those in the know" give their perspective on how they would approach the situation. I would draw your attention to at least one, Peter Tommasini, who welcomed you to the forum in the post just before this one. There are many more to draw from.
Looking forward to making your acquaintance at the Hogtown meet. |
