Hello from Oakland, Ca

Hello everybody!

I stumbled across your forum while doing the ol' "random association point and click" game on the web researching english wheels, their use and their construction.

I recently picked up a '74 honda sl 125 that I plan on doing some custom metal working on. I don't have much experience with this stuff so as with anything I don't know much about, I'm reading as much as I can find on the subject!

I'm a machinist by trade, but my sheet metal experience is pretty limited. I've done a few spinning jobs and started a seat for a previous bike project that I wasn't able to bring when I moved across the country last fall. I know I have pics of that seat someplace, I'll post them when I come across them.

Anyway, looks like a lot of knowledge here and I look forward to reading all there is to read and learning from the knowledgeable!

Hello Will and welcome

There is a get together in Santa Cruse this weekend. Would be a great place to start your learning experience and it's close to you.

Welcome to the site Will, Wheels are great machines but there is a lot more to shaping metal than the wheeling machine. I think the wheel is the wrong place to start learning personally. I was shaping metal for years before I ever used one. It allowed me to learn how the metal reacts when it is being formed and I learned joining and metal finishing hand forming etc. all things you need even if you have a wheeling machine.

Hi all, thanks for the welcome!

David, yes since last night I've seen lots on here that I never knew about it. I wasn't so much researching english wheels as something I wanted to jump right into, more because I was curious about their use. I'm still working my way through the "metal shaping basics" sticky on the forum here. I'm sure I'll have lots more questions!

I'd love to know more about this, like what it's called and where in Santa Cruz it is?

Thanks!

Will:

Look under today's posts. Find Santa Cruze. All the info is there. I just finished welding up some "T" dollies to put in the tool trade drawing. Should be lots of fun and learning from the best on the west coast.

Thanks for the heads-up, it looks great. But it also appears to be full up, so next year perhaps!
