Hello All!
My name is Erick and I have had a passing interest in metalwork most of my life. I am a mechanical engineer by trade, having worked up through the ranks, starting in fabrication. I initially started learning metal work to fix the old cars I drove. As I got older my wife got me into a hobby that has me making medieval armour reproductions, such as the gothic sallet I made a few years ago;

I found this site searching for tips on aluminum motorcycle tank construction, as I am currently tinkering with this;http://www.zweihammer.com/gallery/al...%20up%2006.jpg

I hope to be an active participant, I love to learn as well as pass on what I have learned.

Cheers, Erick Davidson

Nice work

Would love to know how you get the rivet tension correct for movement.

Hello Erick, welcome to the site. I like the helmet I could not get the bottom link to work.

Thanks!
I think I fixed the links. Now to go check out the parts of this site I couldn't a few days ago!

welcome

Welcome. Great helmet! I look forward to seeing more of your projects.

VERY impressive helmet Erick! Can you give us some details of the build? What material, gauge, etc?

Erick Davidson 06-24-2011 09:24 AM

Kerry-
That particular helm was three piece welded construction for the skull (the two halves in 12ga CRS and the aventail in 14ga CRS), the visor, cusp plate and bevor were all single piece 16ga CRS. I have hot raised helms and smaller kit in one piece, like this umbo (center hand protection for a shield);http://www.zweihammer.com/gallery/al..._umbo%2038.jpg
but that takes a lot more time and resources than most people are willing to pay for.

Here is a little repousse on the top of a topfhelm in 13ga CRS.

And here is how it looks on the inside;

I am an engineer by trade, worked my way up from the fabrication side, and it always gives me a smile to realize how my metal working hobby influences how I design equipment in my day job!

I just began to peruse the site, a lot of serious talent here!

Cheers, Erick

12 GA? Dang Erick. Serious metal there. Are you working it hot or cold? I'm assuming hot.

Nicework Erick. I have the very same model motorcycle and have thought about doing something very simalar to what you have done. Please keep posting on that project!

Regards

Steve
