This site seems to have lots of information available. My interests include rebuilding aircraft (especially Mooney). A 1951 Buick convertable that will eventually be a driver, not a total rehab job, just fun. I enjoy learning skills that are new to me. The latest is TIG welding aluminum . Have any of you constructed a drop hammer? I think the trade name is Chambersburg Clecostamp or Rope hammer. The projected use would to make aircraft bubble fairings approximately 18" x 12" x 2"from 2024-0 aluminum or7075 then heat treat. I was thinking Durhams rock hard putty (plaster) might work for dies for a run of 4 or less pieces. Any thoughts? My e-mail is: macn824jl@yahoo.com

Hi Jim,
Welcome good to have another aircraft nut here.
As for your fairings if I was doing the job I personally would use 6061-0 as it gives more in the deep drawing processes. I've found you can use 2024 but with 6061 at least you can weld it. 7075 being zinc gets too hard in my opinion. And as with 2024 isn't weldable.
Cheers,
Ash.
