Hi,
New member from the West Midlands in the UK. I currently have a GT40 replica "fairly near" completion. It's largely scratch built including the chassis, suspension, interior panels, engine, exhaust, upholstery etc all build by myself. The shell is a GRP one from a fabricator much like the originals. It's taken me years, but I've enjoyed the problem solving and learning etc new skill as it's required. I wouldn't say it's perfect, but better than many I hope. As the project is starting to near completion (needs wiring, paint, final assy, registering) I'm looking to what I might build next.. I'm considering a Cobra, but aware they are fairly common as kit cars in the UK and the kits are so refined that they car be built in a few months. So I'm considering buying a standard kit, maybe a Dax or AK or even importing a Factory Five if the numbers work, building it up as quickly as possible (no paint, trim etc) and getting it registered. This is critical as the UK (and EU) type approval rules are constantly getting stricter. Once that's done I'm considering building an aluminum Cobra body to replace the fibreglass one. I'm just trying to understand the amount of effort and skill this would require. I'm over a decade into the GT40 so not worried about long projects, but need to know if the whole idea is achievable. I have basic MIG and TIG skills but no Gas welding experience. I liked making the engine, interior panels in aluminum on the GT40, folding and bead rolling, but never done any metal shaping as such.
