Default Hello from L.I. N.Y.

Hello all. I go by Jay Ess and I am a long time gear-head and have been building and working on cars and motorcycles for over 40 years. My mechanical skills far exceed my metal working skills and I have finally started to move forward acquiring the tools necessary to start metal shaping. I have taken a basic class with Ron Covell as well as with Gene Winfield. That is me "assisting" Gene in my avatar photo. I have been a lurker for years and decided it was finally time to join.

While I own and use metal machining tools, I currently have no metal shaping equipment. I just purchased a used Metalcraft bench top E-wheel coming from SC that I bought from a fellow HAMB Member, and will be looking to add to the equipment as the budget allows. I have no specific projects at this time, but I am interested in learning how to build armor. Don't know what else I can tell you except I look forward to your help and guidance, as well as being able to contribute one day . Thanks, js

Welcome Jay. I like armor also. If I ever finish my roadster and Monique, I'd like to build a suit.

Thank you for the welcome. I have been wanting to learn metal shaping for years and I am here to absorb as much as I can, and ask lots of questions (only after I have exhausted the search function!).

Jay, About the only thing I know about making armor was told to me by a guy at the Oshkosh air show a few years ago.

I was working on Monique and he mentioned that he was an armor maker. He said they did something similar to the FSP (Flexible Shape Pattern) by putting the person in a tight tee shirt and pressing duct taping over it for a couple layers then cutting it off.

I thought that was a unique approach to making an FSP on a live person.
