Default building up to a ew project.

Its probably far to advanced for me, but you never learn if you dont take chances and make mistakes.... so Im going to at least try and make a pair of these rear fenders pictured for my Karmann Ghia.

Im trying to borrow the one in the pics to lift a reversable patern from, and presently in negotiation with the owner.. At £1700 for the part its way out of my price range If i cnt get this part for a patern I will have to keep looking..

There are a fair few interesting shapes on this fender and a few significant problems I have no idea of how to overcome.... but thats part of the learning curve.. ( no pun intended)

It looks like a good part to start learning on. The smaller section that you take on, the easier it is to form.

Wow! Early Ghia fenders are that expensive over there? My friend just sold his 58, complete with motor and all parts for $1500 a couple of months back.

I'm familiar with the part and look forward to to your shape.

What do you mean 'over your head'! It might be way too new for you but not over your head.

If you can't get that part locally, I suggest contacting
http://www.ghiaspecialties.com/
about a pattern only.

In addition to a pattern this might be of some help as well:

There'll be lots to learn by making a pair of those quarters! I say go for it, with all the shape present in it, a Ghia quarter panel is almost a metalshapers dream panel! Lots more challenging than a Bug fender that's for sure.

If you manage to snag that quarter for taking a pattern, you might want to make a point of making a few spaced profiles from it at the same time. They'll come in handy later when it comes time to figure out the arrangement.

Back when I was racing VW's, I always wanted to put one of my off-road race engines into a Ghia for a weekend sometime, but they were getting hard to find even in the late 70's due to the rust around here. Cool cars, I always thought of them as a working mans Porsche.

I like your project, please keep us posted.

thanks for the encouragement fellas.
I managed to sore the rear fender, I bought it outright for half the asking price as the seller was chasing a front wing and being like the rest of us, needed fast cash so the deal was done.
It still wasnt cheap but its a true representation of the rear fender, unlike the ones on my actual car which have suffered from deep scoring, stretching and bad repairs.

flexible paterns will be lifted first then I will decide if all goes well the feesability of a buck for left and right.. We'll see how it goes.

Im expecting the wing to arrive on Friday... all I have to do now is save for the tape

its blooming expensive stuff......any alternatives?

Default tape

you don't need sign tape, just a low tack tape like the purple or blue painters tape as the base layer followed by packing tape with the reinforced strands in it.

Default Tape

Hi Jesse I think what Ian is refferring to is that the packing tape cost's a small fortune here in the U.K. Plus he's going to need a couple of miles to cover the wing.
