I was recently with one man in the workshop. He had a very old car there - valuable. I was looking at his work. I saw that instead of wood, the door was filled with metal. On my question why? He said literally, a cough on the wood, there is a lot of work ...... and for the money he gives me what he wants .....
When I see how you have to chop the forest and drive out the worms .. Beautiful work. This dismantled wood beautifully and inconspicuously burns even after hours of leaving the workshop. I did not believe it was possible.

James I am in awe of the dedication and skill that are going into this car. If I can ask, what is a Drophead coupe? Watching this progress. Thanks for your time to share.

Drophead is the English name for a convertible; confusingly small convertibles such as Morris Minors, were called Tourers,

The cowl vent was fabricated out of brass and the gutter system is cast aluminum. It had two 1/4" countersunk screws holding it to the frame work. They dimpled the cowl vent on either end for the screws and for some reason there was a 1/2" hole right in the center which I soldered a brass patch in. I tinned all the part to be soldered and mounted everything together and then soldered the screws and the patch with silver bearing solder. when that was cool I leaded over all of the low spots and removed the frame from the vent and soldered the brackets on the backside.
I used hot water to clean the acid off and glass beaded the whole vent, reassembled and filed the top straight. The two wood stringers were cut and everything was fitted.

Looks great, Jim. Did you have to pattern and cast the aluminum gutter as well or were you able to use an existing piece?

Really enjoyed learning the way a timber frame vehicle goes together. Thank you for taking the time to share it.

It has been a few years since I have posted anything on this car. Unfortunately the owner had an accident and was killed so the family has decided to finish the car so I will start posting more photos of the progress.
