Default strength of aftermarket panels

hello,



i would have your opinion about buying --american sold-chinese made-- vs handmade patch panel. do the tickness is enough ?


i noticed trough different brands they doesn't have exactly the same bead.? ?



i can't access these potentially craps panels ( not sold in europe ) and think about made mine. i don't care about respect the original beads, just have panels with enough strength.



what is your opinion ?

Hard to answer. I’ve seen aftermarket panels that were actually thicker than the stock metal but you are correct in suspecting that they are in most cases thinner than the original factory panels. The problem is most customers don’t want to pay quite a bit more for a hand built panel just because it’s the correct gauge, they will usually opt out for the cheaper replacement panel. ~ John Buchtenkirch

It's not just the thickness but the quality of the steel as well. Some Taiwan panels weld noticeably different than known quality CR. General rule is that the replacement panel is inferior to OEM in terms of quality of steel used and resulting strength of the panel.

Agreed.
Thickness and alloy are important for panel strength.
So also is hardness. Working the panel increases hardness.

One element perhaps worth considering, also, is geometry.
In other words, when beads, offsets, depressions are pressed into floor panels, the depth and "crispness" of the edges can offer better strength because of the amount of geometry. Sometimes a little bit here and there add up to a measurable increase in strength - or, if insufficient geometry, less strength.

Small things can add up.

Default Aftermarket OEM

I thought I would try to economize on a Mustang project and purchased a set of cheaper doors. Set them back right away, they where about 4 pounds lighter that the better priced ones.
