TuckPuck
I know that a lot of folks use and have used homemade stumps for many years. The inspiration for the TuckPuck was to help folks (including me) avoid the whole process of acquiring a suitable piece of wood and then cutting the desired profile and then having the stump take up a valued piece of real estate in my/your shop/garage. They are very effective tools for shrinking and stretching and extremely portable. I tried to price them cheap enough to make it an easy decision. I understand the "make your own tools" concept. I am one of those folks. I enjoy the satisfaction of fabricating the right tool for the job.

I don't have access to a chain saw but there is a wood reclamation yard where I reckon I could get some chunky off cuts that might fit the bill then a hammer and chisel, is there a diameter and depth it should be?

Hi Craig it don't have to be a tree stump persay just a good sized bit of hard wood .
http://www.allmetalshaping.com/showthread.php?t=361 Hopefully the link is to one way of cutting a cone shaped depression , there's loads of ways to do it , as for diameter/depth there's no right or wrong different sizes and shapes work different ways for different people . It's one of those cut it and try it till you find what you like . If you dig back through the basic tools threads to pages 9,10,11 there's a few on stumps , should give you somewhere to start . Cheers Chris

There was also a youtube video a little while back of a guy making a bowl in some asian country that was incredible. Anyone have the link for that one? Great teaching video using normal stuff everyone can dig up. Bill, I think this is the video you are looking for. My stumps cost me no more than a couple of hours work but if you've got a few quid spare or you're limited for space then Tuck Pucks are money well spent.

Like Stuart, I use my set on a metal stand.
In a pinch, I have even just clamped it in my vice.
