The site loaded quickly for me today. I had been almost inaccessible.

Site is working better today.
Previous weeks have been very slow, or "NO-GO", with "try again later."
Two times I tried posting three times, each.

Seems to be back to normal for me also, hopefully it stays that way. I've seen it on other forums I frequent where things just seem to slow down over a period of time and get really sluggish, I guess someone deals with it as they then come good again.

Glad to hear the site is performing well again!

It turned out to be a bot/spider called Bytespider, operated by the Chinese owners of TikTok, Bytedance. Most decent search engine bots respect crawler delay settings, allowing us to rate limit their activity, but this Bytespider bot was absolutely hammering the server with requests.

To complicate matters, it was using multiple, changing IP addresses, so I couldn't block those. In the end, I was able to block all requests coming in with a user-agent containing 'bytespider'.

After doing a bit more research on this bot, I've found quite a few other sites that have had the same experience with this particular bot. It's thought that it's sucking up data to train a ChatGPT competitor. Who knew AIs were interested in metalshaping?!

On the plus side, while I was trying to identify the cause, I also made a few performance tweaks. Every cloud has a silver lining!

We all owe Dan Smith a huge vote of thanks. This was way, WAY, over my head.

Dan Smith to the rescue!

A few years back l think Kerry posted that we were looking for an admin that had a computer/ internet background. Dan stepped up. He has saved the admins butts a few times since then.

Thanks Dan for another save.
