Hi,

Very neat project, would love to make one in my spare time. I'm curious how you will finish the shape of the fuselage, cockpit forward. Will the cockpit and tail be welded on, or additional shaping of air formed fuse?

Side note, the guy that taught me about airplane maintenance, had a plastic sink in the corner of the hangar, that was broken in several pieces. When I asked "what caused this" he showed me an oil tank from a Beech 18 that blow up during a pressure test. He used compressed air and when the factory seam let go, it took out the sink and thank God, not his hands. Air in a tank is compressible, water in a tank is not....

Nice work,

B

Hi Bill. I totally understand the concerns about using compressed air - it can indeed be scary. To mitigate the chances of a dramatic split I annealed the entire fuselage many times (as well as localised annealing), and creeped up on the shape. I think the cigar-like structure ensured that at all times the structure was pretty strong and was unlikely to explode in a dramatic fashion. It did “pop” at the weld seams a few times, but it was really melodramatic and required just an inch or so of new weld.

I would be totally happy using this method again on a similar project, but only on aluminium. After all, it’s a similar process I’ve done to dented Moto-Cross bike exhausts over the years and companies sell kits to do that exact job.

Cheers, Matt

Found a nice vintage MG wheel with a pie-crust cross ply tyre to use as a base. Machined up a simple hub with a double sealed bearing system for smooth kinetic movement.

Tested the stand today for balance and it works a treat. The Spit rotates beautifully with lightest touch! I’m going to test it all tomorrow out in the fresh air. Fingers crossed 🤞

Chocks Away!

One mile to the right - as the crow flies - is Perranporth Aerodrome. During WW2 this was an R.A.F. base! The Kung Fu school i train at is housed in the original squadron briefing room!

Looks great Matt.
Did you think of adding the tail wing?

G’day! Cheers! I’ve no plans for a tail wing. I kinda like the flow of the fuselage without any excrescences. Besides, as it‘a technically a weather vane a tail fin might disrupt its movement... maybe...
thanks, Matt
