10 or 11 gauge cold rolled steel works great and you can but it in a 4x8 sheets to cut what you need. I will say that welding that long of a joint the frame will warp. I saw a chevelle frame horn kick up about 2-3" when welded out of a jig. if you can put the frame in a fixture and let it cool 100% before removing it it will minimize this tremendously. I would also put frame supports in the rear and box in the lower control arms.

Question

I know the frame is 15' long. But the area to be boxed in isn't.It's in the center.

Please tell me what I should do to build a jig for it. Guess I would be using 1/8 steel material to box it in.

I've gone threw alot of trouble to get this frame,so I want to be careful about everything I do to it.

I am taking this one step at a time. It is a 1979 Malibu drag race car. After boxing in the frame,I want to reinforce the rear suspension mounting points.

And then I am considering this kit which comes already welded together, bolts to the lower a-frame bolt holes and welds to the cut off stubs reinforced by the front tubes of the mild steel 12 point cage.

Can you run C section along the frame and weld that parallel, I have done a few like that and found it to be a lot stronger rather than just boxing or closing.

Question

Yes,that does sound like a better plan.I do think I would still have to be aware of the ends warping.
