383 V8 Ole Yellar high top Astro project
It started with this van:
The bell as a Ice cream van and running board had to go: This is the donor Astro with a V8 in it already: Need patch panels for the Ole Yellar van before junking: But after waiting too long the rust got the best of the Ole Yellar van So I bought a good Florida cargo body to be named as Ole Yellar: Still needing to have the high top on Ole Yellar I removed it from the yellow one: You can see the wood shims to help stiffen the roof after it is cut.I am concerned about stabilizing the body of the Florida body while cutting it during the install of the high top roof and not sure if all these van conversions high tops vans over time do shift somewhat. So I am looking for input to hold everything in place while we cut the roof bows for the install of the roof and suggestions of a cure to keep it as it is over the long term. Thanks Almost forgot-I rented the left side of this metal pole barn in Nov: Now I just got to figure a way to get Dutch and Duke to pay a visit to help out............... |

Kerry no Astro v8's where ever produced. The donor van was a v8 swap already done.Jag's That Run sells the engine mounts.
I bought these before I bought the donor van which had them on it already. They are jig/plasma cut and then bent into shape.I am using the same cast iron truck exhaust manifolds that was on the donor. There guys just cut the "Y" pipe and then re-weld it.Well not really the same one because we are going to extrusion port them and port match them. The engine build is a custom ground hydro roller cam Icon .030 over pistons Scat profiled for a stroker I beam rods with 7/16 ARP bolts Howards forged steel track smart crank RHS 180cc intake runner 72cc heads. 600cfm TBI Mahle plasma moly rings King bearings block is at 0 deck for a static 9.4 with a .040 head gasket Rough guess is 460 to 480 torque from 2000 to 3500 rpm and 350 hp from 3250 to 4500 rpm. We are on purpose building a torque engine for towing my vendor trailer and to help move a somewhat heavy van when not towing.Oh-the rear end is going to be a Ford 9" custom built with 3.70 gears locker and 29" tires. The van gets a 3" lift via pipe spacers on the front sub frame and lift blocks/shackles in the rear.Working on the engine is a pc of cake with only that pipe spacer lift on the sub frame. Here is a quick view of the vendor trailer: I am setting up the trailer so both sides that open is selling space to sell snack foods and down the center is a cargo area.I will set up a separate thread for that alone. There are a number of metal work features that are apart of that trailer.Max wt of the trailer is 3500 lbs.Never loaded to that wt. |

I remember when the Astro/Safari vans came out. AWD was a very popular option around here. I always envisioned a V8, body lift, and 33's.

Here is a example of a 4" pipe spacer lift. You can see where it is welded to the sub frame mounts, then the original frame mount holes are opened up so the body mounts slip into the spacers and you use the stock length bolts.Mine is going to be 3"'s.It makes working on the engine tons easier and allows for a larger tire.Mine are going to be 29" tires.
I almost forgot. You build bumper brackets such that you never notice the lift.I've seen that up to a 5 1/4" lift and it looks normal. Last edited by 1gary; 06-24-2011 at 11:21 PM. |

I am trying to find a member in my Roch,NY area that would be interested in a slider door handle delete and slider delete as me as a customer.I feel because of the loss of feeling in both hands finger tips do to arthritis and diabetics that job is beyond what I can do for myself.I have tried to reach put to some, but haven't got back a answer in sometime,so I can't tell if they are interested or not.I am not looking for finish paint work, just in primer and smooth with limited or no bondo.I have on hand a rust free no window slider to use. Here is a photoshop of what I am talking about:
Kerry-I don't know if this is appropriate.I am just a older member asking for help and I am willing to act as a normal customer to whatever member that would do the job. Please PM me if interested.Thanks,Gary. Last edited by 1gary; 08-02-2011 at 01:20 PM. |

Perfectly OK Gary. You might contact Dutch/Marty Comstock in Herkimer NY if your local guys don't work out.
