'29 Track roadster cowl
So after a long hiatus I am back on this project. Bought as a runner while busy with other stuff a slipping 'box had some job creep and I'm into a full rebuild. Originally a 'glass body that turned out to be pretty assymetrical, after mucking about with resin for a while I decided to bin it and start afresh in steel. Changing direction from the original featureless body, and I always loved the lines of a 28/29 cowl so:
Decided this part would be easiest to hammerform the detail lines. Cut some 5mm plate to shape & tacked down to the bench. Bent the door reveal flange on the brake and clamped it all in place started chasing used another piece of board behind to help the front flange come up finished chasing the detail with a steel tool - 10mm round bar on the end for the radius I wanted "Here's one I made earlier" - flipped the form over for the opposite side bending the bottom flange over shrinking the door reveal. Jaws in this homemade body courtesy of some bits I got from 52Pickup when Harbour Freight had a special on - Thanks Bart! With the 40mm flange there was a bit of distortion - slapper cleaned it up A finished (mostly) piece in place. This is not 100% true to the original Henry piece, but will do just fine for what I am doing here. Great to be back in the shop!! Now to wheel those cowl top reverses Last edited by Barry; 12-04-2011 at 11:44 PM. Reason: pics |

Got a little done on the cowl top over the weekend.
Tried it in one pieces and was fighting too much to handle it on my own (guess I'm not wheeling fit anymore) Split it in two and still struggled Decided to do the two side pieces with the most shape seperately Getting to shape. I tried to define the neutral area with an X marked on both sides, then wheeled from the edges in to stretch. Seemed to work OK - got the opposite side ready & marked out. This one was done in about 1/4 of the time! The centre was approached in the same way. Not quite happy with this - I have a slight bulge near the top which I can't quite get rid of. This is my second attempt. Tried the shrinking disc on the first and messed it up more. I put a lot of lines on the panel to get track of my tracking, counting the number of passes between each line as I moved inboard. It seemed to help! Getting ready to weld it up. Didn't want to tip the flange on both seperately, although I should probably have waited till the panel was welded up before tipping the centre section. The flange is really untidy -cumbersome panel and out of practice I guess.... Looks OK in the pic, but there is still a fair bit of finishing left. The wheel is starting to dig in in places, so I may fire up the planishing hammer I built a while back - or just do it all by hand! Side panels are next, then dash. But I need to figure out steering & pedal box mountings before I put it all in place. Great to be working again, even if this one did kick my butt!! |

Hey Mark - I'll do that in a seperate thread, or over on the HAMB if it isn't on topic for here. The chassis is a make-do affair with what was existing, changed from I-beam with rack&pinion, and a rear suspension that had not articulation side to side - car drove better than it had any business doing!
With hindsight I should have started over and built a whole new frame...go figure! This was never going to be a drawn out project though (it all started with a slipping gearbox - classic job creep!!!!) |

Nice work, thanks for sharing it. Details on your little table? Looks plenty stout.
