Hello from Dayton Ohio. I’m new..ish, been reading and surfing around here and other sites for a while. The talent, professionalism and willingness to share on this site are a tremendous inspiration. A little about me…I just left the Air Force after 26 years. Work now just enough to play. I was in maintenance for most of that time and have always loved anything mechanical.
Many years ago with the TLC and Discovery channel shows like Monster Garage and all the car and bike building shows I became interested in metal shaping. I could not get enough of the shows much to the displeasure of my wife. Never thinking I could do it because of all the tools and special machines. Dreamed of building a car but though it would have to be a kit car of some kind, always liked the Lambo’s. Then I stumbled on sites like this one and started learning about moving metal with a few hand tools. Then to find out I could make the tools I would need. I had to try, so I went out to the wood pile to make a sump. Made the sump and cleaned up a mallet I made 20 years ago. Picked up a peace of scrape 18 gauge I had lying around and without a shape in mind started beating on it. I could not believe how much shape I could get with a couple hammers, spoon/slapper and an anvil. And how much fun it was. I've already used it as parts bowl but still not sure what it is?? ![]() Now all the ideas in my head I can try and make a reality. I will say thank you all, for sharing and help in advance. Don’t know if I will be able to do all I want but a have a great father son project that is sure to give many memories.

Glad you found us Greg, folk here are so willing to share, none of that bitching you get from some sites.
Posts your thoughts and its fantastic the responce you get from all over the world, all these guys creating things from flat sheets of metal. I stumbled upon the site while looking for wheeling machines, up popped Kerry's art deco roadster, http://www.allmetalshaping.com/showthread.php?t=145 I was hooked. As I said, post your thoughts. Cheers

That stump is sweet, how long did you whittle on that?

The sump took less than two hours start to finish. I started with a chainsaw to square up the ends, make the flat sides, the bowl and the two side corner cuts (that part is not my idea, I seen it on someone elses and thought is was a good, but then again the sump is not my idea either).
Side note, just got a new saw. Stihl Farm Boss, which made it way faster. I’ve have many saws over the last 20 years and this is by far the best I’ve had. Rough out with a wood chisel and then 40 grit flap wheel and called it good. Thanks everyone for the welcome. ![]()
