Hi Barry welcome to the forum. learning to use the wheel is not very intuitive it takes a lot of practice and work to become proficient. So just keep practicing.

Welcome Barry, You might try perusing Youtube for some visual clues on proper wheeling technique. Lots of tutorials here as well but you know what they say about a picture.
