Default Hello from Germany

Hello,
My name is Markus and I live in Germany (Lake Constance).
Via the GT40 forum I found the ALLMetalShaping forum:
http://www.gt40s.com/forum/gt40-build-logs/16127-roaring-forties-105-a-17.html
Currently I’m working as a mechanical engineer but I once went through a 3 year apprenticeship to become a certified sheet metal worker. This was more on the industrial side and not that creative when it comes to free forming of sheet metal. But ever since I’m in love with sheet metal – bending, stretching, shrinking, forming, welding etc.
Unfortunately the time left for working in my shop is very limited. I’m planning on building a house with workshop in the basement and hope to start ground breaking later this year.
I’m looking forward to learn a lot of things from your forum.
Thanks for having me.
Regards from Germany

Hi Marcus and welcome to allmetalshaping. Having experience in sheet metalwork is a good start. Probably half of what is needed in restoring a vehicle is flatwork (as it is known in the coachbuilding trade) A large portion of the rest of the work is welding and I presume you have some experience in this although you may need to learn some new techniques in this regard. Hand shaping and finishing techniques are the hardest part of the skill to learn but the most essential. Working with machines will come with a little practice.

David
