Default Hello from the PNW

Hey there guys, my name is John. I build and restore cars as a hobby and am looking to improve my metalworking skills. I’d like to learn more about tooling, techniques, and the best way to resolve some of the problems I come across in restoring cars. Most often it is how to recreate a factory piece in metal. I hate Bondo and people that hog it on because they lack the experience or patience to make a correctly fitting patch panel. This is where you guys come in... feeding my appetite for knowledge to improve my skill set! I look forward to learning more about you guys and your forum!

Welcome to the forum, John.

Hate is a strong word. When I was younger, I've had some fun times with a bucket of bondo and a case or two of beer.... Can we still be friends?

Hi John,
Welcome to the metal gang.
Sheetmetal parts are graded on finish as "paint grade," "plating grade" and "polished."
I've seen some awesome beautiful delicately-filed paint-grade work (V12 Packard dual cowl) get loaded up with "metalman in a can" and then hog-sanded so that all of the delicate body lines were lost, (and this was a Pebble Beach level shop that took some BoS at Pebble!) The metal man quit the next day. Can't blame him. Took him over a year to bring that car up. I offered to hire him on in my shop, but he had other plans for nursing his remorse.

The painter still works there.

Hi John,

Welcome ! There are a few fellas on the forum from the Portland, SW Washington area.
This is a great forum where you will find real professionals that are willing to share their knowledge, which is a real breath of fresh air.

As more folks find this site and join, maybe someday a PNW metal shaping class will be planned. As of now it's just a idea.

Gents,

Thanks for the warm welcome. We’ve all done some “bodywork” after a few too many beers. I have a story about body working with a claw hammer, a crescent wrench, and a stick. Turned out pretty well, but that is a story for another day.

It isn’t so much that I hate plastic filler, it is just that I prefer prudent use of it. I am not good enough to metal finish a car... not even anywhere near close to that... so I rely on it as well. It is fine to use it as a bit of a crutch, but not to rely on it being a metal man in a can.

I’d love to participate in a PNW class, we should look into that more!
