Default My Introduction to ALLMetalShaping.com!!!

Hello everyone! I'm 28 years old, and live in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. I am a tool and die maker by trade, and have been interested in metal working since my late teenage years.

Lately I have become more and more interested in tin work/sheet metal working. I am in the middle of building my own bead roller, and hopefully later on down the road an English wheel.

Currently I am building a street/strip car that I would love to build some inner door skins for. Nothing fancy, but I think it will be a great beginner project to get started.

Welcome to the sand box.

Making the door skin is hard but welding it in with out distorting the hell out of it is way harder.

If I was to start over learning how to shape sheet-metal, knowing what what I know now, I would master how to weld in panels first. Lot of good threads here on the subject of metal finishing your welds, also a lot of different methods of doing so. Find the one that works the best for you and go with it.

Just something to think about.

Your talking about making a steel panel and then welding it in place over the entire door?

I was thinking more along the lines of something riveted on. Or possibly making it two pieces. Make it nice and smooth up around the window area, that would also cover the top section so you can't see down the window crack, and then making the center of the door skin removable so I can get at the wiring, and window mechanisms inside the door.

EDIT, I should mention, this is for the INNER door skin. The interior panels are removed out of the car to make room for the roll cage, so i need to make some sort of panel to cover all the inner door mechanisms. Just to clarify.
